After painting, if the colour fires out also light, it must be strength-ened by washing over with some of the pure color. If the function in gen-eral is pale or dull it can be brightened by strengthening the shadowsand half-tones, and lastly washing in the regional color. As a rule, shadowsshould be painted darker than they are to be when fired, as dark colorslose more in proportion than light colors in firing. When a colour is toodark it may be corrected by washing over it a contrasting colour. For in-stance, if the pupil of an eye has been made a deep black, it will looklike a staring spot and spoil the impact of the painting, but a wash ofyellow ochre or yellow brown over the spot will modify the intense black-ness by lowering the tone.

As green is the prevailing color on St. Patricks Day, I have suggested a din-ner menu where this color and white are used exclusively. Let a dish of ferns bemade the centerpiece and scatter ferns about the table. Let Irish flags decoratethe room. Have the china green and white, so far as possible. Green silk embroidered over a small wire, to imitate the shamrock, placed ateach plate, for a bontonniere% is quite appropriate and novel. The dominant dish should be eggs—eggs and eggs, over again. In pagan days, the use of eggs in the spring was symbolical of nature—thebursting forth of life. With the Christians, it symbolizes the resurrection: Fromdeath—Life. The free use of eggs on Easter has now generally become a customwith all nations, whether that nation acknowledges its religious significance or not. White and green are the most appropriate colors for decoration. Whitechina and pure white linen, with Easter lilies for a centerpiece, make an ideal look-ing table. Hard-boiled eggs sliced crosswise, make pretty garnishings for thedifferent dishes. On this special day, for breakfast, let the eggs be cooked toorder as best pleases each individual fancy. . The 578 firemen are organized into six divisions, each ofwhich is responsible for a section of the city. As Peking hasno general electrical fire alarm system, special watch towershave been erected, and from the tops of these guards are con-stantly on the lookout for fires. The fire-fighting equipmentconsists, for the most part, of old-style hand-operated enginesthat are able to throw only a small stream of water, but a highpower automobile fire truck has recently been purchased andis housed in one of the buildings near the Pei Hai or North Sea.Water is secured from the wells and also from the mains of thePeking Water China Company. Any one who has seen a fire in a Chinese city is not apt toforget it very soon. The fire department comes pulling itsengines by hand, and carrying flags in the day time or largelanterns at night.
